Rudolf Steiner in English
The very first full-lenght work by Rudolf Steiner to be published in English was a 1905 lecture called "The Occult Basis of Goethe's Work" which appeared in 1907 in The Theosophical Review. Much of the earliest translations appeard in Theosophical periodicals. For example the essays that became Knowledge of Higher Worlds (CW 10) were serialized in 1907 and 1908 in English, and three or four lectures were translated and published during those years. In 1909 The Way of Initiation translated by Max Gysi was published, followed in 1910 by The Results of Initiation (the two volumes would later be combined as Knowledge of Higher Worlds - CW 10). Rand McNally published a translation of Steiner's Theosophy (CW 9) in book form in 1910. From there many more books, lectectures, and articles followed. The book-length works of Steiner's in Enghlish now number over 1,030. For the first century little effort was made to match the German editions, which in any case the German volumes were in a state of flux. Only in 1961 did the German archive produce a master index of Steiner's complete output (the Gesamtausgabe, abbreviated GA, aka The Complete Edition) and only starting in 2004 did the English publishers seek to reproduce these definitive Complete Works volumes in their entirety.
